You may have noticed that summer in the UK has actually been nice in the last few years. Rather than the customary British summer that lasts one-and-a-half days then rains for the rest of June and July, recent years have been some of the hottest on record.
According to Extinction Rebellion: “19 of the top 20 hottest years have occurred in the last 19 years, and the past four years have been the hottest on record. As of July 2020, January 2020 was the warmest January ever recorded in Europe, we saw the hottest May ever and we already have an 85% chance that 2020 will turn out to be the hottest year on record.”
“Well that doesn’t sound so bad” I hear you say, “I can holiday in Barry next year rather than in Spain and still get a tan!”. Well, for a start, that’s the worst idea you’ve ever had. Second, rising global temperatures means ice sheets and glaciers melting, which means worldwide flooding. So within the next century Barry would be underwater anyway. This also means the destruction of the habitats of a massive variety of creatures, such as polar bears, penguins and, of course, the residents of Barry.

In 2018, the International Panel on Climate Change said that, in order to keep global temperatures at a safe level, we have to reduce carbon emissions by 45% by 2030. Although we can all do our part by driving our cars less, eating locally produced food, and switching to renewable energy, most of the weight falls on massive corporations who care more about short term profit than long term survival of the species. God that’s depressing… Maybe you should have another drink.
